As far as a brand concepts go, it doesn’t get much better for me than the Los Angeles based Stonghold. The company was founded in Los Angeles in 1895 as the area’s first denim manufacturer, and operated continuously until its closure in 1949. Fast forward to 2004 when Michael Paradise and Michael Cassell revived the defunct work wear label as a contemporary brand with every bit of authenticity as the original.

The Stronghold of today operates in a sort of time warp, making its products to the same quality and standard as in the early days. Staying true to its roots, Stronghold still manufactures all of its products in the U.S. The company operates a store on Abbot Kinney in Venice Beach, California (1625 Abbot Kinney Blvd. Venice, CA 90291 (310) 399-7200), that stocks the house label, as well as an edited collection of classic brands. Revered American companies like FilsonPendleton,White’s BootsRussell MoccasinsAmerican Optical sunglasses and Stetson hats.

The store’s helpful manager, William Sack, explains the concept behind the store’s merchandising: “We carry only brands active while the original Stronghold was still operating, so they have to be pre-WWII. In addition, they have to still be made in America, and made on the original patterns.”

Denham continue their work with denim and found fabrics for Spring Summer 2013. Taking inspiration from two sources “the contemporary music festival (think

Fuji Rocks in Japan) and the influence of modern mil-spec contemporary military detailing, ” old styles are reintroduced in new fabrics as well as the introduction of fresh designs. Ever wondered what happened to skydiving parachutes when their times up? Denham scoops them up and offers them a new life as a smart technical parka. Fancy fabrics such as silver-back waterproof-breathable packable nylon and custom-printed blue camo sit alongside simpler linens and cottons, with plenty of smaller collections within the Spring 2013 line offering a bit of variety. We’ll take a closer look in weeks to come, for now check out the lookbook in the gallery.

Distinct Life has gotten together with the Detroit Denim Company to create a pair of limited edition jeans as a part of the first offering of Distinct Life’s Dry Goods collection. The jeans were hand made in Michigan with Cone Mills white line selvedge denim. Features include a top button milled from a solid piece of copper and attached with a screw and contrasting pocket bags that reflect the Distinct Life corporate colors. Another notable detail is the Horween leather patch co-designed by Rick Williams and Frank The Butcher.

Nezumi Denim Co. may be an infant of the denim world, but the man behind it, David Campo, is certainly not. Hailing from Stockholm, Sweden, the premium micro-denim brand is the brainchild of the man behind Sleezy Teez, who has a good 10 years worth of fashion design and production under his belt; Campo’s list of contracted clients include the likes of H&M and Carlings. Starting off less than a year ago as nothing more than a project to make limited jeans, the project-turned-brand has now flourished into a full lineup and much praise from the public, with his N 0-2-50 model as the brand’s main attraction. The name ‘Nezumi’ translates from Japanese to ‘Rat,’ and is taken from the fabled hero, Nazumi Kozō – Japan’s own version of Locksley’s Robin Hood. With an aspiration to create quality handcrafted denim jeans, Nezumi Denim Co. continues to produce using high-grade materials and a veteran team. The jeans are now available at Sivletto, and the brand also offers collaborative T-shirts and accessories. Source: Denimhunters

For some, the weight of their denim is everything. If numbers matter when it comes to your jeans then Lee 101 has something for you. A small selection of goods made from their 230z denim “premium quality narrow loom selvage fabric” milled in Japan. Having seen their 101z jeans in this weight close-up I can tell you these mean business. Most definitely a winter months fabric, these thick, heavy jeans have a smooth look to the weave, a tight denim with a slight sheen and enough rigidity to head off down the shops on their own. The fabric is also available in a tote, holdall and backpack all with leather trim. Take a look.
